Know Yourself Completely

ISSB has a lot of myths associated with it. Those who get recommended say that its very easy, those who are not fortunate enough, say that its very tuff, its not merit based, “I performed well but they still rejected me”. “ Its impossible”.
What ever is said by others you have to realize that none if it matters. What matters is what you are and how you perform in that 4 days test. You abilities and talents would be checked there and if you have what it takes, then nothing can stop you from becoming an officer in Armed forces of Pakistan. You might have dreamed to be a fighter pilot, or sitting in a tank, or may be in a submarine, all these dreams can become realities if you follow a simple rule which is known as the art of war
“Know your self, know your enemy and know the time to strike”
What this means is that you first have to see and realize which abilities you have. Do you have confidence to face other people and challenges, are you able enough to face unexpected circumstances, are you bold enough to take on what others seem is impossible. If you then you KNOW YOUR SELF. Remember just knowing yourself increases your chances of success by 33%.
After analyzing your self , next step is to know what ISSB is all about. What are they looking for in the candidates and how can you become up to the mark and their requirements.
After this comes the third and final part of getting your self ready. Getting to know what is it that is not in you and is required by the ISSB. Please remember that there is no such attribute in the personality of a man that cannot be developed. What ever is needed in ISSB can be developed in your personality and you can be the best one for them. Knowing the time to strike comes here. You have to see in how much time you can prepare your self for the test and which batch are you going to apply.
When you have figured all this, then its time for you to realize your dreams.
Here I shall help you in the first two phases to make you (By grace of Almighty Allah) nations proud officers.

Command tasks in ISSB

Command tasks in ISSB

Command task is one of the most important tasks you have with your GTO. After seeing your performance in the Discussions, GTO by now has made a judgment about you and would like to check you more and verify his decision whether you are to be recommended by him or now.

First of all your whole group would be called for fall in, meaning you would be ask to stand in a straight line. Then GTO would ask who would like to become the first commander. It has been seen that almost all the candidates raise their hand. But its up to GTO to select one among you all. Usually he picks the candidates based on his assumption that guy no 1 is the best among the rest according to his performance in discussion and should be tested first. But this is not a hard and fast rule. He might pick anyone.

Now comes a tricky part. He selects one candidate and takes him to the Command task. During that walk he asks the candidates some questions. He says that this is an "informal discussion and has nothing to do with ISSB" but in reality its also an assessment. He asks you questions like "aj kal kia ker rahay ho?" and other question in very polite and friendly manner as if he is your close friend. Thats a trick to get an insight. BE CAUTIOUS.

When you reach the task, he gives you a briefing, telling you about the time you have, which items you can use like drum, ropes, planks etc. He would tell you which points are "out of bound" marked red , which are "in bound" which are "out of bound for you but in bound for your items" marked with red and yellow strips. Ground is usually out of bound. Out of bound means that if you touch that point it would be a foul and you would have to do it again. More over, some times even jumping and throwing are also declared foul.

NOTE: Listen to his briefing clearly and remember the position of how the items(drums ropes planks) are placed before the task, as you have to put them back in the same position and order after the task. After hearing the entire briefing, call your group and then the you start the task.

After getting the briefing from the GTO , he would give you some seconds to think of a plan as how you would get the people across. After that time you have to call your group. Once they arrive you have to give them briefing as given to you by the GTO. Usually in Command tasks the main objective is to transport the material and the group across a certain piece of land which has some ditches, some ( pi ) shaped wooden stands on which you have to put the plank and cross that particular piece of land.

After giving the briefing to the group you have to ask them if they have any questions. If they say NO, then you should tell them your plan as how you want to get the things done. If some one gives a valuable advise then consider it other wise if some one in your group tries to show efficiency and act as a "smart ass" ignore his points and make the people concentrate on your plan. You should only change your plan if its not working and there is a strong opposition of the group.

In my case the group wanted to opt for a path which I didnt. But when they all said no we should go for their choice I let them. But they failed. So i moved forward my self and showed them what I was planning was actually right, and when i executed my plan my self I actually did it what others could not do.

When your task is over then try to perform well in other's task, dont try to show off efficiency, but actually perform efficiently. GTO will be monitoring each and everyone. And when others would see that you give valuable suggestions, and act efficiently they would even rely on you and that makes a great impression before the GTO.

Some words of Advice and caution:

1. When you are a commander dont think that you are just to give orders and others will execute. When your help is needed, you should work with the group.
2. Avoid using the words "difficult" "impossible" "no" " not" "never" etc. Instead of saying "doing this would be difficult" you can say "doing this would be more TIME CONSUMING".
3. Call everyone with their chest number not by their name. Its a foul to call them by their name.
4. Use the people in your group wisely. Those who are trouble makers , keep them behind or away from the critical work. Those who are physically strong, make them lift loads like drums and planks. Those who are slim, to climb up the plank. Those who are thin and tall are good for jumping. In other words you should use your human resource efficiently.
5. In other's command task when you have a suggestion you should convey it first to Commander "Sir if we do this it would save alot of time" or "it would help us greatly". THis would catch the attention of GTO.
6. Always try to remain at the most critical point of the Task from where u can get the task done.
7. Its not compulsory that the task gets completed in the time alloted, when the GTO sees that the task would get completed or there is no way it would get done in time, he usually tells to stop and finishes it to save time. In my own task just 1st step was done in time and the whole task was still to be done, but when GTO saw that i can do it, he said "your time is up". GTO just wants to check your nerves , your ability to command others, your ability to come up with instant plans to solve some problem or challenge.
8. When the time is UP, put all the planks drums

First Impressions

Most people make an initial opinion of a stranger within the first five minutes of meeting them. According to research candidiates' impressions are made up of the following:

Body Language and image (70%)

Tone of voice (20%)

What you say (10%)

As soon as you enter the building you need to be polite to everyone you meet. You need to remain calm and confident, give a firm handshake, and remember to make eye contact. You need to put both yourself and the interviewer at ease by being down-to-earth whilst remaining business-like, it is often quite a good idea to have a few conversation openers, especially if the interviewer takes you to the interview room, it helps break the silence..

Interview Techniques

The interview is not only a chance for the interviewer to assess if you are the right person for the job, but it is also an opportunity for you to see if the forces are suitable for you.

During the interview you need to look for opportunities to be proactive and ask your own questions or try to lead the discussion where appropriate. Questions should reflect your keenness to work for the Forces...

Keep your concentration levels up during the interview and make sure you listen to the responses the interviewer gives you. The worst mistakes happen when people end up asking questions about topics that have already been covered, or don't hear or understand what the interviewer has said.

Key points:

Make sure you give the interviewer your full attention

Wait for them to finish speaking, before you answer the question

Make sure you ask open questions, to ensure you get full answers

Check you understand everything that has been said

What are your biggest accomplishments? This should be job related, and is a chance to show your competency

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Points you need to remember:
Smiling is a good positive signal, as it reaffirms your good nature

Maintain eye contact

Relax do not rush or fidget

Mirror the interviewers techniques, if they laugh, laugh with them

Maintain an alert position, sit up straight, don't slump, but be comfortable

Always have a confident and honest attitude.

Why do you Want to Join Pak Army ?

Why do you Want to Join Pak Army ?

Often candidates are asked a simple question during interview,
"why do you want to join army/navy/airforce?"

Guys always get confused and give silly replies like

"Sir: To serve my nation"
or
"I have a passion to join armed forces.."

Although these answers might be your true motives for joining the armed forces and are very noble, but these answers are not appropriate when it comes to ISSB. You have to give a bit more mature and logical answer. Because these questions can result in counter questions like you can serve the nation many other ways...... or you have good marks you can become an engineer and serve the nation...etc

The rule of all the answers should be "give clear and complete answers which would satisfy all his queries."

Here are some of the answers which would be more appropriate:

•Sir, its a good career, with a lot of grace, it can give me great opportunities to rise in ranks based on my abilities, it is a respectable profession,

•Sir, its a dynamic job with lots of field work, not a desk job where you spend rest of your life.in other words its an exciting job, which which would polish my abilities and help me learn alot.

My answer was

•"Sir i read a book about Airforce "pak fizaya ke dastan e shujaat" which had the compete story of the Halwara Mission of Sarfarz Rafique Shaeed, he is my inspiration for whom i am joining air force."

(Note: These examples are just to give you an idea, its highly discouraged that you use them as they are, as your answers, try to think of your answers in the same lines as these...Be original)

Major Guide lines to paas ISSB

The major guidelines to pass the ISSB are:
At ISSB, they are looking for alert, motivated candidates who have the potential to complete the long, arduous and extensive training which faces all newly commissioned officers in the service. The Selection Board is looking for many things, such as clear thinking, the ability to remain calm under stress and strain, team skills and willingness to participate. they don’t want you to display rashness or aggression; neither do they want you to be dull or spiritless. Be honest, straightforward and frank. Don’t display over-consciousness, false projection or superficial behavior.

Your Appearance
You can tell a lot from a person’s appearance. Show them you have got a sense of personal pride.

Self Confidence
Self-confidence and maturity are largely the product of experience. You can strengthen these qualities by participating in-group activities, taking on responsibility and exercising independence.
Expressions
In ISSB the bord looks for people with good expression, may it be Urdu or English, clear direction, a good vocabulary and sense of grammar. U can try to develop these by joining in debates and group discussions.

Academic Ability
Good academic results mean you will be good at absorbing the training of advanced and sophisticated equipment. Make your English and Mathematics sound.

Leadership
If you possess the above qualities, you will have a greater potential for leadership training. Try and seek out positions of responsibility in academic, youth, social or sports activities.

Fitness
Take adequate physical exercise in the run up before you report at the ISSB.

Motivation
You should be convincing and sincere in your reasons for wanting to join armed forces. Make sure you really know for what and why you are applying.

Awareness
they are looking for people with an awareness of the world around them, and an interest in military matters. Discuss current affairs and defence issues with your parents, teachers and friends and keep yourself updated with good newspapers.

I hope my friends u will dont feel any difficulty to understand all these points... ur questions are always welcomed by me.. Thanks

ISSB Test
My ISSB Experience
Let's share your experiences with us after giving ISSB test(s). Share your thoughts about discussion topics, story writing pictures, incomplete sentences, questions asked in interview etc. It will help others in preparing for ISSB next year.

Your Experience
" This website is rich with information I really appreciate it, if I could have visited this website I definitely could have succeeded in my ISSB test.

But this website didn't have one thing that is the experience of those people like me who have attempted for ISSB. I mean how the experience was, what did I learn or what mistake I made. Posting such type of real experiences will definitely help those who are planning to attempt for it. Thanks to this website that they have now started such segment on my request.

So I thought that I should be the first one to tell you guyz about my ISSB experiences. I used the word EXPERIENCES because it was not only once I attempted for this test 5 to 6 years back. Initial test were just a piece of cake then I was sent a call letter from ISSB recruitment Malir Cantt where my final test was to be conducted.

Well the first day was full of suspicion as every one was trying to be sober but as the few hours passed we started getting familiar with each other I also made couple of friends who were also my roommate. They spent most of their time in Hanky Phanky but I preferred to stick with books which I carried with and kept of RATTAFYING that who was the first chief justice of Pakistan and rest of the questions like this (it was my mistake as it didn’t help me). Some of the boys were so relaxed that it was like spending their summer vacations for them (in the end such boys got through).

Well cutting the story short I was so confused before the starting of my interview that I even entered the interviewer's room without the proper signal by him (it was like when the bulb outside the room goes on then I was suppose to enter the room). As I sat infront of the interviewer I was expecting the most difficult question but he asked non, he just kept reading my mind I mean checking me mentally. Another mistake I made was answering the question in English… Oh my God now I realize that was the worst mistake. If he was talking in Urdu then why the hell I was talking in English. He took hardly 5 minutes and shake hands with me. Well that was it no second interview nothing.

I also made another attempt but again the result was the same but the mistakes may be different.

So that was My ISSB Experience, I hope you may learn something out of it. "

"Assalam-u-alaikum every one. How are you all? I am perfectly fine. My ISSB was from 5 to 9 dec and it was a life time experience for me i really enjoyed it. On the day of arrival forms filling was done .On the first day, from 8 to 10 in the morning was really teasing because of fear of screening out but thank God i passed from that safely only three girls were screened out, after that Psychological tests started which wasn,t that much tough because of ARIF sir's help. You know sir ARIF,as you adviced to write atleast one story on military ,i do that, i use your idea of writting story on great personalities when there is an open picture , That test was a bit tough not because of words but due to time but on the other hand it had a real fun , at the end of the day our backs and necks BECAME "TAKHTA".

oN THE 2ND DAY GROUP DISCUSSION held and was very good ,candidates who are afraid of it dont do that it is very easy, two topics are usually given in urdu and one in English .GROUP PLANING WASN,T THAT GOOD, we coperated with each other in the group but unfortunatel couldn't made a plan.Doesn't matter it happens. After that was progressive group tasks and HALF GROUP TASKS, which were again fun activity but the thing is that you should go with your group mates dont bother any one .On 3rd day individual obstaclesstarted and among 47 girls i was the first victim , i did two obstacles completely and in high jump stick was falling again and again, and when i rushed for the 4th obstacle time ended.

Command task were good especialy for me it was a routine work because of experience of proctorship and head proctorship in college ,but keep in mind that dont stay outside when you are a commander coperate with your mates and stick to your point of view.

Now interview, in intro they ask Qns about Pkistan and Pakistan forces , physics ,maths ,chemistry ,islamiat, your boidata , so write each and every thing true about urself, they ask about it .SO This was my ISSB experience may all others can do well in ISSB , one thing i really want to say that give your best and leave the rest on Allah, if He has written something in your fate no one can snatch it from u. Best of luck to all of them who are applying or ISSB. "

"Well as the previously the two members have explained their experience. My experience was not quite change form them. All the tasks and obstacles were perfectly fine. but i dont know that what they were looking for which i dont have, in short i was not recommended by ISSB. I have given the ISSB recently a week ago. My psychological test was fine, group task was fine and command task was superb as i completed it within the time limit. I have completed 6 obstacles out of 9. My interview was perfect. He asked me abt my family background, BPs, Sex, Girl friend, why i want to join PAF, capital of Greece, capital of Thailand, GDP, GNP, NNP, my introduction in english and then he wished me and shaked hand with me and that all. but im not recommended. i think there must be a detailed result should be given to the candidate so that he/she can analyze him/her self. Only saying that you are not recommended is not a proper way. I need reason that why i was not recommended by ISSB so that i will improve my lacking next time."

"hullo! guys, after being thorough study of all ur comments what I feel is a separate story, let me tell u that I am an example that i have been recommended twice so what could be my position that i am not suppose to tell u.Ladies and gentlmen must feel pride that u all are assets to the nation.ISSB, means what?, at times we even forget the abreviation. It is actually an INTER SERVICESS SLECTION BOARD,comprises, members from all the three defence forces of the country i.e navy, army, and airforce. In genral I would say that ISSB is a neutral, transparent, justified, logical, experienced and a dedicated board performing their duties in slecting such a lot of cream out of a huge mob,but very truly and honestly. In my opinion they only need average people, and not below/above average people.here, I will give an example of buying a plant from a nursury so we do,nt by a plant which is not even out of its seed and submerged yet,but we,ll prefer to buy a plant at least have trunk, leaves, and a few of branches and at least 6" above the ground.Generally two gentlemen play a vitol role in the entire slection one is GTO(Group testing officer)&the other is psychatrist, then interview would be a penut if u r prepared and posseses five most important qualities.so asses urself,R U a. couragious. b. adventurer. c. dutiful. d. efficent. e. truthful."

"Dear Jawans, I am really amazed to see that still our youth is motivated to lay their lives for Pakistan. Its been long ten years that I appeared in ISSB in Kohat. I still remember my vest no. PKWI 61. I joined PMA in 96 Long Course, but due to certain reasons unable to complete my trainning. But indeed I was the part of the Elite Force what you call ARMY. I joind in Second Pakistan Batallion Aurangzeb Company. My ISSB experince was also quite memorable. I remember last day I was wearing Gray Shalwar Qameez with black waist coat and pakistan flag badge. I was one of the successful candidates who returned from ISSB center. Now after more 12 years when I saw your experinces I went into my past. But one thing is veru common that still quick maths, good english, physical strength, public speaking, analytical skills are the key elements fro road to success. I belongs to Marshal family but this not mean that I developed inborn leader qualities. Army GTO only identify leadership skills who can perform best under pressure, if you have the qualities and best fit in the role, then you will be slected. One thing there is no hard and fast rule for slection. Its sheer demonstration of your capabilities and skills on the D Day. I hope my above experince will assist you. Remember my Father Col Osama used to say that Army is the only way of life. You can serve nation some other way also. But I like people who has the courage and bravery to stand for their country. Best regards, Khawar Osama."

"i read the issb expereience of many persons here. it was very goog for me to learn about the peoples who have apperared in issb. i also wanted to shar my experience of issb . i appered in the technical cadet course TCC-21 last year. i was not recommended by the board . i think that i made many mistaked in it . when interviewer ask me about my family background then due to some un known reasons i could not answer one of them at that time . but it,s answer was known to me. they usually ask from the biodata form which u had wrriten on the very first day. so first of all before going to issb u should know what u have to write in the biodata form and keep them on ur mind.always speak truth. dont be over smart. coperate with others. in all task. be confident.that,s all that i learned in issb. i have now aplied 4 pma long course and my initial test is to be held in gilgit on 18 june. hope iwill be recommended this time. ineed ur speciall prayers. inshaAllah what i learned on this site will help me. "Aslam-o-alakum to all brothers I want to share information about my first intelligence test because this site is very informative and helpful for new students who they want to join pak army as an officer in regular commission but I dont know why I could not get information about it.Thats why I want to share with you people. When I went to army selection and recruitment center and started intelligence test an army officer said you have 90 minute for the test and three tests and He had not mentioned that each test has a separate time but He had said for asking any kind of question before starting the test but I did not ask any question I dont know that is my boo boo(mistake) or bad-luck. In short I solved the first test in given time mean 30 minute but in sec test when I solved 70 MCQs out of 94 the time had offed. And came on computer screen you can not success this test. I said to army officer sir what is this he said O betey go to home try again after six month.I make a anger mouth and in very high tension came back home."
